AFRICANDERS’ WILD ENTHUSIASM

Voortrekker Centenary Memorial

CAPE TOWN, December 15.

The eve of the laying of the founda-tion-stone of the Voortrekker Centenary Memorial finds the country in a state of subdued excitement. Eng-lish-speaking people have done their utmost to recognize Afrikaans sentiment, and have responded in the principal towns to every suggestion that would add significance to the historic event.

Forty thousand people are encamped on tlie kopje overlooking Pretoria, where tlie stone will be laid tomorrow. The arrival of wagons, which traversed tlie roads taken by Voortrekker torchbearers and carried Jan van Riebeeck’s diary and Piet Retief’s treat}’ with Dingaan, symbolizing the spread, of culture, induced wild enthusiasm. There are bonfires on all Hilltops, and a choir of 5000 children sang hymns.
