NOISE ON BEACH

Titahi Bay Weekender’s Complaint

“Can you do anything to stop that continuous hurdy-gurdy noise on the beach every Sunday?” the Makara County Council was asked at its monthly meeting yesterday by a correspondent, “Weekend Resident.”

“Yesterday," the writer proceeded, "J was on the beach, and to get away from the row I walked round the rocks near the boatsheds, only to bear it far more plainly. I just couldn’t escape from it. In my town house I have a wireless that goes from morning till night, being put on by all members of my family, and I go out to Titahi Bay each weekend for one thing— to escape from my own wireless. AVe people who have been working hard all the week want rest and quiet in the weekends, and that is why I enjqy the delightful beach at Titahi. But why spoil it with this drum-drum and frightful singing? It is doubtless only an advertisement, and no one would object if it were kept inside like any ordinary gramophone. I had a talk to several residents and weekenders, and they were all of the same opinion as myself. The beauty of the beach is utterly spoilt with the hideous noise of the loud music. AVe shall be very pleased if you can do something to stop it. I am writing on behalf of several- people.” Cr. AV. P. Hume suggested that the writer of the letter might acquire a weekend residence on Kapiti Island.

Another councillor said that while the writer of the letter might not admire the wireless. 20 or 30 people might gather round to enjoy the entertainment. All tastes were not alike. The letter was-not even “received.”
