Wakefield Memorial Proposed

A decision to support a suggestion that a memorial to Edward Gibbon Wakefield be established during New Zealand's •centennial year was made at last evening’s meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy .League in Wellington. Mr. Gordon Reid presided. It is proposed that the memorial should take the form of a travelling scholarship or other award given by either an examination and/or-thesis on New Zealand history and/or colonial .policy in generaj, or the greatest contribution —.political, literary, educational or other —toward any movement for the progress ’of New Zealand as a nation in the British Commonwealth. The tenure and value of the scholarship will be decided at a later date. A suib-committee comprising Mr. L, 0. H. Tripp, Mr. Gordon Reid, Dr. M. Kronfeld, Mr. R. Darroch, Captain A. V. Hale Monro, was appointed to arrange an afternoon function in connexion with the visit of Earl and Lady Beatty to Wellington next year.
