Beautification Of Gateway To Palmerston North PROPOSAL COMMENDED Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N„ November 8. The proposals of the Palmerston North City Council to acquire about 17 acres of land to beautify iu the vicinity of the new railway station _ was commended by Mr. D. Collis, chairman of the Kairanga County Council, which mot to-day. “The city council has adopted a very commendable long-sighted policy,” he said. "It would lie too late to wait for 10 years after a number of secondclass buildings have been erected in a haphazard way. The city authorities are keen to make the gateway to the city attractive, in keeping with its environs.” Proclamation Sought. The subject arose when a letter was read from the town clerk, Mr. J. 11. Hardie, advising that a joint committee, representing the city council and the county council, which had been set up to deal with a town-planning scheme for the railway station area, had met recently and had decided that the Railways Department be asked to make a proclamation of part of section 422 in Kairanga County, comprising about 77 acres, in terras of the Public Works Act, 1928, with a view to the city council entering into negotiations with the Railways Department for the acquisition of the whole or portion of the land. It had also been decided to invite the co-operation of Mr. Hodgens, M.P., and Mr. Cobbe, M.P., and that the Director of Town Planning be asked to meet both the city council and the county council. “We can do nothing till we meet the director,” said the chairman, “but I think we are acting along the right lines in co-operating w’ith the city council. With the erection of the new railway station the city would grow in that direction, he said. There was need for a definite town-planning scheme. Eventually the city council would absorb land which was now in counties. Other councillors voiced their approval of the city council's proposals.
