LABOUR DAY SPORTS

Big Gathering At Newtown Park BROOKLYN RUNNER WINS MARATHON TITLE Despite the'cold weather, there was an excellent attendance at the annual Labour Day sports at Newtown Park yesterday. A long programme of running, cycling and dancing events was put through in a most efficient manner, the organisation and control of the gathering being most commendable. The presence of a Highland pipe band enlivened the proceedings. The morning events comprised races for married men and women and for children. In the afternoon the main part of the programme was run off, interest centring hi the athletic and cycling events, for which the entries included a large number of prominent Wellington amateurs. There were also events for primary school boys and girls ami for secondary school boys, as well trs dancing events. The principal athletic event was the Wellington provincial marathon championship, 26 miles, run under the auspices of the Harrier Sub-Committee of the N.Z.A.A.A., for which there were nine starters. The course was from Newtown Park to a point near Point Howard and back. The event was started by the Hon. W. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, and chairman of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation, and was won comfortably by the promising Brooklyn runner, R. E. McGregor, from A. L. Stevens (Scottish), and G. B. Appleby (Brooklyn). It was McGregor’s first major success, and one that must bring him into strong consideration for provincial honours. He was always with the leaders, and headed the field after 20 miles to finish strongly three minutes ahead of Stevens, his time being 2hr. 55min. 29 4-ssec. In winning the Trade Union Relay (one mile), the Wellington tramways team (L. Elliott, H. E. Holmes, V. Maher and C. Bennett), recorded a 'performance that will take a great deal of beating. It was their fourteenth consecutive success, and in 20 years the tramways team has lost the event twice only. Elliott has competed in this event for 14 years, and Holmes for 12 years. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, was present at the sports, also the Hon. P. Fraser and the Hon. W. E. Parry. The principal officials were: President, Mr. W. Fox: secretary, My. P. E. Warner; treasurer, Mr. G. Bodell; assistantsecretary. Mr. F. Allerby; director of sports, Mr. A, C. Kitto; judges, Jlessrs. M. Hyland and P. J. O’Neill; steward, Jlr. W. N. Broadley.
