SHORT-PAID LETTERS
Improvement Shown
An examination made yesterday at Wellington of letters posted for overseas indicates that the position regarding short-paid articles has improved during the last week, particularly in respect of correspondence for the United Kingdom. A check disclosed that 8 per cent, were short-paid. The heavier letters posted by business firms were in practically all instances prepaid crorectly. Of the total number checked, approximately 30 only one letter was short-paid. Bundles of letters for other Empire countries were also checked, and the position disclosed is: Malaya, percentage of short-paid letters, 10; India, 10; South-Africa, 5; Canada, 10.
The position in respect of foreign countries to which the postage rate was formerly Id., has Improved, but the percentage of short-paid articles is still high. The position disclosed is: United States o_‘ America, percentage of short-paid letters, 30; Italy. 20; Argentine, 21. * considerable number of the shortpaid articles for the United States of America are addressed to film studios and have obviously been posted by children.
