DUNCAN AND MOSES IN FINAL
Open Billiards Title
The semi-finals of the Wellington open billiards championship were played at Billiards Limited's showrooms, Wellington, last night. A. Duncan beat R. C. Whitford and S. Moses, the New Zealand champion, beat R. Stuart. The final will be played on Monday at 7.30 p.m. In the opening game Duncan was the first to settle down and with the assistance of a favourable run from the balls ho quickly assumed a lead, and the score was calk'd in his favour at .150 to 50. Whitford, at such a substantial disadvantage, continued to keep the game open and presented his opponent with many opportunities, when a little tightening up might have’kept the score eloser. Dunean played the better game and though undoubtedly favoured by the run of the ball, his superiority was reflected in the final score o.f 400 to 291.
The best breaks were: Duncan, 28, 22, 52, 38, 24, 21 ; Whitford, 20, 23, 21. Stuart, the I’etone representative, held Moses for the first 100, but thereafter Moses achieved a definite ascendancy. With several useful breaks Moses opened a substantial gap and eventually ran out the winner by 400 to 212. Moses included in his total several useful breaks, among the best of which were 20, 37, 43, 22, 83, 21 and 65 unfinished.
There will be no games to-night. Mr. J. Meldrum will control the final on Monday, and a keen game is anticipated as Moses, who was the 1936 and 1937 New Zealand champion, will meet A. Duncan, who has also held the national title.
