IMPROVING RACE CULTURE
Claim For Labour’s Policy
A claim that by reducing working hours and increasing facilities for education the Government had gone far toward bringing about a more cultured race was made by Mrs. C. Stewart, Labour party candidate for Wellington West, in an address at Brooklyn last night. “We hear a lot about, what shorter working hours have done and the bad effect they have had, but anyone who thinks can realise that. it. is not true,” said Mrs. Stewart. "We must have more leisure still to cultivate the cultural side of our nature. By reducing working hours and increasing education facilities the Labour Party has gone far toward bringing about a more cultured race.
“The charge that we are. in danger of losing our individualism. really amuses me. Our opponents are. not concerned with our losing our individualism, but. they are afraid of what, for want, of a better term, I will call our collective individualism. The greatest fear of the Nationalist is co-operation. They know that if we stand together nothing can move us from office. “There is a lot of talk about freedom by the National Party." continued Mrs. Stewart. “True freedom is not doing what one wishes. It can only be gained by doing away with want and fear of the future. 'When once we realise that our duty is to our fellow men and not to a small group of people, who al any time can call the tune, then, and only then, will we be on the way to freedom.”
