' Barnett —Pennington The marriage took place recently at St Peter’s Church, Wellington, of Charles Gordon Barnett, office manager in Wellington for RKO Radio Pictures. Pty., Ltd., to Phyllis May, only daughter of Mrs. S. Pennington and the late Mr. G . Pennington, Hamilton Heights, Brisbane, Queensland. A motoring honeymoon afforded the groom an opportunity to show the merits of North Island beauty spots to his Australian bride. Writers And Artists Meet

The monthly meeting of the New Zealand Women Writers and Artists’ Society was held in the Lyceum clubrooms last evening. Mrs. A. D. Kerr, presldeht of the society, introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr. GraemeHolder, who was judge for the society’s recent literary competitions. Mr. Graeme-Holder spoke briefly. He criticised the work and made humorous remarks while giving hnits to short-story writers. The prizewinners were: Poems, Enid Saunders (Mrs. L. V. Phillips) and Miss Jean Mather (equal) 1, Mrs. O. M. Igglesden 2, Mrs. E. S. Andrews 3; short stories, Mrs. E. S. Andrews 1, Miss Ena Eden (Ashburton) 2, Mrs. O. M. Igglesden 3, Miss M. Sievwright special prize. Supper was served later in the evening.

Farewell Party At Masterton

Mrs. C. Wright, Church Street, Masterton, who is leaving shortly on a holiday visit to America, was farewelled recently by a number of her friends at a delightful surprise party which, was held .in the oak room at Hugo and Shearer’s tea rooms. The gathering was a very enjoyable one and testified to the popularity of the guest of honour. On arrival Mrs. Wright was presented with a bouquet of spring flowers, and later with a handsome leather hat box. Mrs. V. Miller made the presentation on behalf of her friends and wished Mrs. Wright a happy voyage and a -safe return. During the afternoon Mrs. N. H. Prior sang two songs, Miss M. McClymont accompanying her at the piano.

Those present were Mesdames J. M. Simpson, G. Milne, W. H. Saunders, E. J. Stainforth, N. Miller, C. Simpson, J. Horsburgh, L. Blatchford, G. Holmes, W. Shaw, C. McClymont, N. H. Prior, Nee, J. L. Murray, T. Chamberlain, B. Iveson, Misses B. Munro. M. and A. Brown, M. Nee, N. Williams, C. McMaster, M. McClymont, and B. O’Sullivan.

The recent monthly meeting of the Foxton Women’s Institute was presided over by the president, Mrs. F. Brown. The resignation of Mrs. Riddell was received with regret and a welcome was extended to two new members, Mrs. Wishart and Miss G. Huntley. It was decided that the institute birthday party be held in the MasonicHall on Tuesday, August 16. This will be in the form of a social and dance.

Shannon institute members were present and entertained local members with an interesting programme. A demonstration of making posies from sweets was given by Mrs. Hely, and Mrs. Roberts gave an interesting talk on gardening. Miss Ames contributed solos, which were much appreciated. Afternopn tea was served. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Tibbett. U.S.A., are guests at the Hotel St. George while in Wellington.
