CHINESE ADVANCE IN THE NORTH
3000 Japanese Claimed Killed - (Received August 10, 1.10 a.m.) Hankow, August 9. Heartened by reports of the Japanese withdrawal of troops from North <’bina, the Chinese are advancing along t he north bank of the Yangtse and are hammering at the gates of Hwangmei and Taiha. They captured a hill overlooking Kiukiang and repulsed a Japanese landing party 30 miles from tha» city. Tlie Chinese claim that Japanese warships are withdrawing from Poyang Lake and arc making no attempt to advance. It Is estimated that 3000 Japanese were killed in Kiukiang.
