SAMUEL MARSDEN

Centenary Celebration

(Received July 20, 10.45 p.m.) Sydney, July 19.

An outstanding personality at the centenary commemoration of the death of the Kev. Samuel Marsden at the Sydney Town Hall to-night under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society was the Maori Bishop, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, who read a special message from the Maori section of the church and praised Samuel Marsden’s work among the Maoris.

Added interest was lent to the gathering by the presence of a Maori choir.

The centenary commemoration is continuing at Sydney Town Hall until Friday. It includes an exhibition of arts and crafts of various races minls- . tered to by the Church Missionary Society. Illustrated lectures and talks are held each day on mission subjects. ' Archbishop Mowll paid a tribute to Marsden’s work in New Zealand, the success of which was the main factor in placing the Maojis on equality with the white people.
