PRIVATE HOSPITALS

Regulations Governing Hours Of Work

Some relaxation of the regulations governing the hours of work of nurses is sought by Mr. S. G. Holland (Opposition, Christchurch North) in notice of a question to the Minister of Health, Hon. P. Fraser, in the House of Representatives. Mr. Holland intends to ask the Minister whether his attention has been directed to numerous statements appearing in newspapers in various parts of New Zealand expressing alarm concerning the recently gazetted hours of work regulations iu private hospitals, and the danger of private maternity hospitals having to close down because of the difficulty in securing the services of a sufficient number of trained nurses required to staff the institution under the new regulations. Mr. Holland also asks whether the Minister will issue instructions that where sufficient nurses are not available to comply with the regulations, the regulations will not be enforced.
