WELLINGTON HOSPITAL AREA
Extensive Programme Of Work Recommended
REPORT OF ROYAL COMMISSION
Subsidiary Institution For The Hutt
A programme of work estimated to cost £863,075, as against £750,000 contemplated in the board’s original project, is recon> mended for the Wellington Hospital Board’s area by the Royal Commission of Inquiry appointed by the Government to investigate present and prospective requirements in the area. The main works recommended by the Commission include a main block at Wellington estimated to cost £496,380, a combined general and maternity hospital in the Hutt Valley, £185,781, a nurses home, £79,750, a boiler house, £52,423, and a new store and temporary dining-room, £18,368. The commission considers that in many respects the present accommodation and services are inadequate to a varying degree: (1) In accommodation for the various classes of patients of the Wellington hospital, including operating theatre facilities; (2) in nurses’ home accommodation; (3) in the following working facilities at the Wellington hospital: Boiler house with steam services, kitchen, stores, laundry, and morgue; (4) in facilities for treatment of patients in the Hutt Valley. The report was released yesterday by the Minister of Health, Hon. P. Fraser. The members of the commission were: Mr. H. A. Young, principal stipendiary magistrate, Christchurch, who was chairman; Dr. D. S. Wylie, C.M.G., C.8.E., Palmerston North; Dr. H. Hardwick-Smith, Wellington.
