TOTAL COST OF £863,075

Works Recommended

MAIN BLOCK NEARLY HALF MILLION Valley Hospital, £185,781 ORDER OF CONSTRUCTION SET OUT The following is a summary of the works recommended by the commission, together with the board’s Wellington architect’s estimate of costs: £ Main block 496,380 Nurses’ home 79,750 ,-?9 4‘)Q Boiler-house ■•••••••• o-, Superintendent's residence .. 4,140 Road formation •••• 850 Temporary wards 9,<>13 New store with temporary din-ing-room • 13.368 Laundry alterations 5,500 Workshops 4,000 Children’s hospital schoolroom, etc. 2,630 New mortuary 6,440 Combined general and maternity hospital, with fulltime outpatients' department, in Hutt Valley .'... 185,781 Total £863,075 Tn comparing the total cost of these proposals, £863,075, with the estimated cost of £750.000 contemplated in the board's original project, the following facts must be mind, the report states: —

(a) A separate hospital service is being provided for the Hutt Valley, including a maternity hospital and fulltime outpatient department. (t>) The total bed accommodation in both areas is 28 more than in the original proposal, the estimated cost of which would be £22,400.

(c) Accommodation for an additional 50 nurses is being provided in the Hutt Valley. This is estimated at £30.000. (d) The estimate includes, some £2S,(XX) in respect of miscellaneous works which the board apparently proposed to provide out of capital levy. Reason for Differentiation. All the works recommended hereunder could be carried out simultaneously, the only reason for tfie differentiation being the time taken in the preparation of plans and specifications and obtaining the financial and other authorisations required by law. The commission therefore recommends that the works be proceeded with in the following order; — (1) (a) Nurses’ home, (b) boilerhouse. The plans and specifications of these have been practically completed. (2) Alterations J-o and renovations of the children’s hospital. (3) The erection of the new bulk stores, laundry alterations and the conversion of existing boiler-house to workshop, the plans of all of which are in course of preparation. (4) Temporary ward: This will involve the demolition of tbe tin shed and use of the superintendent’s residence as a preliminary nurses' school, and for the temporary accommodation of nurses. This, in turn, will involve the building of the new residence for the superintendent or the acquisition of temporary accommodation for him in the meantime.

(5) Hutt Valley Hospital: It is estimated that about six months will be required to prepare the plans and specifications of the Centenary Hospital, and that the erection of the building will occupy a further three years. In our opinion it is advisable to provide extra accommodation as soon as possible. As the time occupied in the preparation of plans and specifications and the erection of the Hutt Valley hospital should not exceed two years, ■we recommend that this work take precedence over the preparation of final plans and specifications for the new Centenary Hospital. (6) Mortuary. (7) New centenary block. Estimated Expenditure. The estimated expenditure to give effect to these recommendations so far as Wellington city is concerned is £ New centenary block 496.380 Nurses’ home 79,750 Boiler house 52,423 Other miscellaneous works .. 48,741 Total 677 ' 294 Toward the cost of tn«® proposals the Wellington Hospital Board has already obtained the sanction of th®
