WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Poor Standard Of Play ST. JOSEPH’S BEAT TITLEHOLDERS Wellington women's hockey competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday, when play was marred to a certain extent by the greasy surface of some of the grounds after the rain which fell before senior matches were commenced. The standard was poor in the senior A grade. There was a nip in the air, and a fairly strong northerly was blowing. There were no surprise results 'luring the day, C.O.G. and T.0.G.1., the unbeaten senior A teams, still holding their leading positions. 'The other match played in the grade was won by T.0.G.1L A feature of the senior B competition was the success of St. Joseph’s against the championship holders, Upper Hutt, and as a result St. Joseph’s now lead l:i rhe championship table by three points. Out of respect for Miss Adele Brooky, a member of the team, whose death occurred last week, the St. Joseph's team wore black arm-bands. 1’.T.0.G. and Karori West played a draw, while Hospital won. by default from Wenerei, and T.O.G. won bv default from Clinic. Hutt United (senior A) defeated C.O.G. (senior B) by 2 goals to nil in a friendly match. RESULTS AT A GLANCE Senior A. C.O.G. 5. Hutt Valley 0. T.O.G. I 5, Poneke 0. T.O.G. 11 6, Varsity 0. Senior B. St. Joseph's 3, Upper Hutt 2. 1’.T.0.G. 1, Karori West 1. T.O.G. won by default from Clinic. Hospital won by default from Wenerei. SENIOR A GAMES Good Combination Prevails. The game between College Old Girls and Hutt Valley, played at Woburn, was somewhat marred by infringements on both sides, particularly in the first half. Hutt vastly improved on the previous week’s display and in the circumstances put up a tine performance. However, the forwards lacked the polished combination of College Old Girls and consequently were on the defence for the major part of the game. In the first spell honours were even, with play moving slightly in favour of Old Girls. The only score in the first half was secured by Miss H. McLellan. who, after a melee in Hutt’s circle, netted. Both teams made some determined assaults in the second spell, but Hutt forwards, just when a score seemed imminent', would break up allowing College Old Girls’ backs to clear. Old Girls gained the ascendancy toward the close and netted four goals iu quick succbssioii. Misses M. Prestney (2) and 11. McLellan (2) being the scorers. College Old Girls won by 5 goals to nil. Miss M. Wilkins and Mr. A. J. Ross were the umpires.. A Poor Exhibition. What was expected to be a good exhibition of hockey developed into a ragged display when T.O.G. 1 met Poneke at Kilbirnic. Rule infringements were conspicuous on both sides, and it was only toward the closing stages that any pretence of bright hockey was witnessed. T.O.G. dominated the. play for the better part of the match, Poneke's backs, Mrs. Harris and Miss E. Melndoe, defending splendidly.- Iu the'first spell T.O.G. led by 3 goals to nil. Misses J. Mack (2) and D. Roberts being the scorers. Poneke forwards made a few good movements in the second spell, but lacked circle thrust and understanding, Miss E. Lark, T.O.G. back, always proving a foiling factor in -their advances. On a few occasions Miss J. Riley, Poneke leftwing. made splendid efforts to penetrate the opposition defence, but she lacked support..' T.O.G. netted a further two goals by Misses J. Mack and 8. Jackson, winning by 5 goals to nil. Messrs. A. Roxburgh and R. J. Lloyd were the umpires. Interesting Game at Karori. A rather interesting game was witnessed at Karori Park when Varsity and T.O.G. Il met. Varsity showed vast improvement, and forced Technical to defend. Miss R. Surridge was very prominent for T.0.G., and sent her forwards away for Miss G. Horne to score. From midfield Miss M, Holden received on the left wing, and working into position, netted. T.O.G.'s third goal was spectacular. From a corner Miss Horne received and ran the full length of the field to. score. Miss Horne scored a further goal for the side in the second half, and Miss B. Scott also increased the score, but Varsity enjoyed a considerable time in T.O.G.'s territory, and forced three consecutive corners. From a T.O.G. clearance Miss Douglas added ano|h?r goal, and the game ended: —T.O.G. II 6. Varsity 0. Mr. S. Brugli was the umpire. SENIOR B GAMES St. Joseph’s Take Lead. By defeating the championship holders, Upper Hutt, in a hard and fast game nt Upper Hutt, St. Joseph's took pride of place on the ladder in the senior B competition. The teams were evenly matched. and provided many exciting exchanges, the respective backs and goalkeepers being continually kept on the alert. More polished combination in the forward line decided the game in favour of St Joseph’s, who won by 3 goals to 2. Misses Margaret Baillie (2). ami K. O’Brien scored St. Joseph’s goals, and for Upper Hutt Misses M. Fuller and M. Aucklin were the goalgefters. Mr. M: Wellington was the umpire. flaying one short. 1’.T.0.G. drew with Karori West at Newtown Park. Although fairly fast, the game lacked circle finish, both sets of forwards tailing to show the desirable sting on reaching the circle. Messrs. D. Harwood and IL Tahiwi were the umpires. Lower Grade Results.
