Dance At Lower Hutt The dance held in the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt, on Thursday night, to assist the funds of the Lower Hutt Free Kindergarten, was an outstanding success, both financially and socially. The hall was taxed to capacity with dancers. A home-made supper waw provided by inc committee, which was a« follows: Mrs. J. W. Andrews, oatmeal lace; Lady Koberts, Mrs. H. E. Leighton, black satin; Mrs. M. Upton, jade-green and lavender taffetas coatee; Mrs. J. Aogel, powder-blue niurocain; Mrs. L. Bennie, floral georgette; Mrs. A, Davies, blacK clo<iue; Mrs. J. Fletcher, rust matalass?, Mr. and Mrs. T. Purvis, green floral crepe de chine; Mr. and Mrs. N. Gillespie, black net and gold; Mrs. 11. Atkins, silver lame; Mrs. J. Baldwin, black lace, Mrs. F. Campbell, Mrs. W . Nash, black niariette; Mrs. B. S. Knox, blue clotjue, Mrs. G. Savage, Mrs. R. Salt. yrs. Grocott, floral crepe de chine; Mrs. C. O. Neilson, floral ninon; Mrs. E. D. Harland, floral marocain; Miss liora Meadows (secretary), check taffetas. A charming rainbow waltz ballet was presented by members of St. James s Girls Club, trained by Miss Miriama Heketa, who wore black and silver. The girls, who wore graceful rainbow-shaded frocks, v^ere:—.Misses May Martin. Joan Stoupe, Alois, Mair, Joan Burrell, Betty Treseder. Evelyn Simmons, Audrey barglsson, and Marjory Whitmore. The decorations were particularly effective. Huge bowls of hydrangeas and autumn leaves were banked in front ot the stage, aud vases of tawny chrysanthemums were used on the supper tables. Press, an original member, wo® re-elected chairman of the Hutt Vailey Electric Power Board on Thursday after a ballot, Mr. P. Dowse being the other candidate. Members spoke of the fine service Mr. Press had given to the board and of his close attention to Its affairs since its inception. Mr. P. Robertson, who proposed Mr. Dowse, Mr. R. G. Stephen being seconder, said that while he agreed with the remarks made about Mr. he felt the chairmanship of any board should go round the table. Mr. S. Blackley : How are you going to start the round robin? A ballot was taken and Mr. Press elected. MAN WITH BAD RECORD Another Month’s Jail “You have a pretty bad record,’’ said Mr. 11. P. I/awry, S.M., at the Magistrates' Court, Upper Hutt, yesterday, to Leo Brendon Collins, labourer, aged 32. whom he sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, to be served cumulatively with the sentence he is now serving, on a charge of obtaining from John Frederick Curtis, Christchurch. £4/5/- by a valueless cheque. The prosecutor. Constable F. J. Williams, said that Collins was serving a six months' sentence ior theft of overcoats from motor-cars. The magistrate said that Collins bad been before the court for false pretences in 1933, three charges of theft in 1934, nine charges in 1936, and two in 1938. Constable F. J. Williams said a suitease in which there was a cheque-book was stolen from a ear in Christchurch. Collins tendered a cheque from this book to a Christchurch optician in_ payment of an account for .10/- and received £4/10/change. He said ho got the cheque from a man in a hotel.
