Determination Of Policy

Mr. Arthur Henderson (Labour) asked in the House of Commons what representations had been received from the New Zealand Government regarding the policy of the British Government in relation to the recognition of the Italian conquest of Ethiopia and the extent to which the New Zealand Government will be affected by any such recognition on the part of the British Government. The Secretary for the Dominions, Lord Stanley, replied that it would not be in accordance with practice to publish the terms of communications between Governments of the British Commonwealth regarding foreign policy, but he would remind Mr. Henderson that the attitude of the Government of New Zealand toward recognition had been stated publicly by the New Zealand representative at the recent meeting of the League Council. The second part of the question, he said, related to a situation which so far had not arisen, but in general it would, of course, be for the New Zealand Government to determine its policy in a matter of that kind.
