Talk On League Of Health And Beauty
There were three guests of honour at the afternoon reception given yesterday by the Wellington Travel Club, at the Majestic lounge. They were Mr. .Kuehl Guuji, first Consul-General lor Japan in New Zealand; Mr. Nukiit’uji, vice-consul for Japan; and Miss Caroline Ward, England. The lounge, which was decorated with earlv jonquils, was crowded with members and their friends. Among other visitors were Mrs. Tennent. Auckland; Mrs. Fairweather, Christchurch; Mrs Wood, Palmerston North; and Mr. Ivan Levy. The guests were received in the foyer by the hostesses, Miss Amy Kane, Mrs. Walter, Gray, Mrs. A. M. Mulligan, Sirs. G. Castle, and Miss N. E. Donovan (secretary). The chairman, Mr. R. R. .Scott, welcomed the guests, saying that it was a tribute to New Zealand's growing nationhood that we should now have a consul for Japan. Mr Gunji replied and spoke of the cordial relations existing between his country and New Zealand. In welcoming Miss Caroline Ward, Mr. Scott said that she was connected with the Empire-wide Women’s League of Health and Heauty. Miss Ward, in he r reply, told something of the aims and development of this league. She explained that it teaches a form of physical exercise, specially designed for women by a Melbourne professor. A lady named Mrs. Joseph Khonn was permitted to use these exercises ill America, find later taught them in London. Among her pupils was a girl who afterward became .Mrs. Joseph Stack, and who derived so much benefit from the exercises that she wanted to spread them beyond the wealthier classes. It was she who founded the Women’s League of Health and Beauty. Having obtained permission to use the exercises, she arranged them into graduated sequence, eliminated all jerks and set them to music. At her first class, which was held in a drawing-room, there were 16 women, and it was from this class that had grown the movement which now had 120,000 members and a training school for teachers. Miss Ward went on to say that the movement is being started in. Now Zealand. Mr. Scott thanked Miss Ward for her interesting talk, and wished her success in her venture here. Miss Amy Kane also thanked Miss Ward and gave a brief talk on folk dancing. During the afternoon Mrs. W. Duncan sang, accompanied by Miss Dorothy Spinks.
