BEE MORTALITY

Spray Poisoning In Orchards APIARISTS’ DISCUSSION Dominion Special Service. Hastings, May 10. “Bee mortality caused by spray poisoning in orchards is one of the serious difficulties the Ha -he’s Bay apiarist has had to contend with this season,” said Mr. J. N. Walker, president of the Hawke's Bay Beekeepers' Association, in his report presented at the annual meeting of the association last night. Mr. Walker said that this was a great.problem which would have to be dealt.with in the near future. Some orchardists were indifferent to the danger. Investigations had already been carried out, but as far as he knew nothing bad yet been finalised. The year had been a good one for the industry except at the close of the season, when some beekeepers lost heavily through floods. The display of honey at the Hawke's Bay agricultural and pastoral show illustrated the fact that Hawke's Bay honey was equal to any other in New Zealand. The improvement in quality owed a good deal to the work of the committee and of Mr. Roisterer, Government apiary instructor.

Mr. A. Lowe, speaking as an orchardist and beekeeper, said it was a fact that the codlin moth was becoming more and more difficult to combat and spraying at petal fall was becoming more important. Apparently at the moment the bees must continue to suffer. He could not see at present how the problem would be overcome. If success were to be achieved there was the necessity for co-operation between the beekeeper and the orchardist. The meeting favoured the holding of the annual conference at 'Wellington each year and decided to frame a remit to that effect for the conference. Election of Officers. The following officers) were elected:— President, Mr. A. Lowe; vice-president, Mr. Donkin ; secretary, Miss D. Al. Dalgliesh ; auditor, Mr. W. 11. Ashcroft; committee, Messrs. G. N. Walker, 11. Shepherd. W. H. Ashcroft, W. G. C. Ashcroft, G. AV. Laking and L. H. Mnultsaid, Mrs. Maultsnid; delegate to conference, Miss D. M. Dalgliesh.
