FINE TROTTING

Second Championship Event ADDINGTON CONTESTS Supertax And Parisienne Leading For Title Br Tulegrath.—From Overcheck. Christchurch, April 23. The intcr-Dominion trotting championship was advanced a stage further at Addington to-day. A lijjit drizzle was experienced in the early part of the morning, but it cleared away before the first race started. A light shower occurred toward the close of the racing but the condition of the track was not interfered with. The three heats of the second qualifying event for the championship were run off without accident and provided most stirring contests. 'Supertax registered a very meritorious victory and Lucky Jack and Parisienne also won their heats in brilliant style. It has now been decided to continue the championship on Tuesday and Saturday. A large number of North Island visitors returned by to-night’s steamer express greatly disappointed at having witnessed only two days’ racing. At the conclusion of the second day’s racing the position in the championship stands as follows: — _ , > Supertax, 1.7 points ; Parisienne, 17 ; Lucky Jack. 81; Plutus, 81; Blair Athol, s’; Evicus, 3} ; Pot Luck, 2} ; Joy’s John, 24', Nervie’s Last, 21; King’s Play, 2; Lady Chilclewood, 1; King’s Warrior, 1; Double Great, 1. ■The totalisator investments were £45,742/10/-. The second day of last year’s meeting tvas held on a Wednesday, when £38,872 was invested. Aristotle Comfortably. Parrish Guide failed to go away correctly in the Mascot Handicap, losing anything up to 80 yards, but for which he would probably have won, as once he settled down he trotted brilliantly tofinish a good second. Aristotle had registered some particularly fast times in his work at New Brighton, but on race days had ruined his chances by unsteadiness. On this occasion he did his work well all the way. Cantata Easily. Cantata, bracketed with Mystery Yet, was made a firm favourite for the Gloucester Park Handicap and, coming away at the top of the straight, won by three lengths from Colonel Grattan and Waipahi. Supertax Brilliantly. With four furlongs to go in the first heat of the second qualifying event for the championship, Supertax was still at the tail of the field, but he then began a run on the outside and, accelerating at the top of the straight, had the race won 100 yards from home. King’s Play again made a slow beginning. Kernel Lu and Icevus were the eqrly leaders. Rocks Ahead ran up into fourth place blown the back. Graham Direct broke on the western bend, and dropped back. At the stand the field was running in close order, the leaders

being Rocks Ahead, leevus and Lady Childewood. Supertax began his run four furlongs from home and was handy to the leaders' at the entrance to the straight, where the colours of Aide de Camp were just showing out from a bunched field. Pot Luck had charge with a furlong to go, but he could not withstand the brilliant finishing run of Supertax, who won' going away by two lengths. King's Play finished well again to gain third money. Frisco Boy was fourth. Ginger Jack Completes Double. Ginger Jack, Ironside and Toorak finished in that order in the J. P. Stratton Handicap, thus confirming their form of the opening day. Ironside appeared to be kept too far back in the middle stages, otherwise he would have been more difficult to bent. Lucky Jack in Great Finish. U. Scott went away at a gallop in the second heat of the championship event, • and Bonny Azure failed to settle down until she was at the back of the field. Blair Athol and Our Walla were the early leaders, but U. Scott had pulled his way to the front at the end of four furlongs and led through the straight from Blair Athol, Dan’s Son, Big Author, Worthy Light and Reporter. Down the back U. Scott still had charge from Reporter and Blair Athol. Lucky Jack and King’s Warrior began to move up, racing down tire back, where Bonny Azure also substantially improved her position. Lucky Jack and Blair Athol were the first t‘ turn for home. A great race down the straight was witnessed, Lucky Jack winning by a neck from Blair Athol, who finished strongly over the concluding stages to gain second honours by a head from King’s Warrior. Bonny Azure also finished determinedly in fourth position. Her’s was a good effort having regard to the fact that she lost so much ground at the start. Indianapolis was well up at the finish and should have a chance in the third heat, which-will be run over two miles. Still Unbeaten. Peggotty continued her series of victories by winning the Frank Howell Handicap nicely from Bittersweet and Golden Eagle. Norman Fox lost ground at the start, the early leaders being Garner, Peggotty, Walter Wrack and Lijtle Reta. Captain Bolt broke racing down the back and lost, a lot of ground. At the end of six furlongs the leading division comprised Garner. Peggotty, Writer, Flotsam and Wal.ter Wrack. Four furlongs from home Peggotty took charge and drew out to a lead of two lengths. Trotting perfectly, she maintained her position to the end and was never seriously threatened. Morewa Comfortably. Morewa won theTakahe Handicap comfortably, being greatly assisted by a clear run down the rails in the straight in the first round. Bing Crosby and Marlene lost ground at the start, Dark Hazard leading out from Red Pigeon and Bay Flyer. Racing through the Straight Dark Hazard, on the rails, had charge, with the others racing out from the rails to find firmer going. This allowed Morewa to race through into a nice position benind Dark Hazard. Down the back the latter still had charge from Red Pigeon, Morewa and Fremont. Southern Chief moved up round the field racing down the back ai d was in a bandy position as they turned for home. Morewa, however, finished too strongly for Southern Chief to win by three lengths. i Parisienne Again. Parisienne was again successful in winning her heat of the championship event, though she was fully tested by Nervie's Last. Parisienne went off at a gallop and Willow Wave also lost ground at the Htart. Double Great whs the first to show out from Nervie’s Last. Joy’s John and Evicus. With six furlongs-covered Nervier Last had control from Evicus. Parieienne, Glenrossie and Kolect. Down the back Double Great was just shading Nervie’s Last, Evieus, Parisienne and Plutus. Parisienne covered a bit of extra ground rounding the western bend, but was almost on terms with Double Great and Nervie’s Last as they straightened up for the run home. A truly great race resulted over the last furlongs and Parisienne \ was fully extended to win by half a length from Nervie’s Last, with Evicus a length and a half further back third. 'Willow Wave came home well and may be expected to do better in his two-mile heat. Plutus did not race up to expectations, and was beaten on his merits.
