HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING

Louis To Meet Schmeling In June

(By

Right Cross.)

By knocking out Harry Thomas in (he. fifth round of a world championship heavyweight boxing contest at the Chicago Stadium on April 1, Joe Louis, the negro, scored his third victory since taking the championship from J. J. Braddock at Chicago in J une, 1937. Unlike the champions of old, who fought only at long intervals, Louis believes ih keeping himself fit, and, incidentally, swelling his banking account, by fighting for his title ay often as opportunity offers. Since becoming ehampion, he has in turn beaten Tommy Farr (England), Nathan Mann, and Harry Thomas.

Thomas, who had been fighting about Chicago for some time, had his first bout of consequence against Max Schmeling at Madison Square last month . Having a reputation as a very hard puncher, Thomas put up a fair fight until the eighth round. Schmeling dropped him seven times in this round, and the referee stopped the fight. It was Schraeling's first appearance in America since he knocked out Louis in au elimination bout 18 months previously. Leading critics in America up till the end of January did not place Thomas among the first ten of the heavj-weight ratings.

Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, the German,- will meet for the world title in America on June 22, and Mike Jacobs, the promoter, has commented that Schmeling must arrive in America to start training at least 40 days before the fight is to take place. “I am worried over all this war scare, and I don’t want Schmeling to arrive here too late to train properly, and leave me holding the bag.” Schemling is likely to arrive in plenty of time, as it has been the dream of his existence during the past year to get a chance to knock-out Louis, as he did in America a year ago, before Louis won the title.
