OVERDRAFT AND RATE ARREARS REDUCED
Upper Hutt’s Finances A reduction of £5ll in the bank overdraft and £337 in rate arrears for the financial year ended March 31 was reported to the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night by the town clerk, Mr. B. M. Wilmshurst. On the receipts side Maidstone Park revenue showed an increase of £175, heavy traffic £59 and motor drivers’ licence,, £4B. In taking into account the year’s working it had to be considered that there was necessary expenditure incurred which was unforeseenat the start of the year. Cr, F. P. Keys congratulated the town clerk’on his work, saying he was “a really live executive and the right man in the right place.” The mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, endorsed these remarks. CHILDREN’S PICNIC The Silverstream 'Women’s Institute recently took members’ children to Day’s Bay for their annual picnic. The weather was ideal. Besides bathing; boating and racing, the children were provided with ice-cream, sweets and balloons. The races resulted: — Girls under seven : Yvonne Kurth, 1; Olga Johnson, 2. MAN’S SUDDEN DEATH IN STREET ■ While proceeding from his home at 1 High Street, Petone, yesterday to the employment office, Mr. Thomas Coghlan, aged 58, married, a packer, died suddenly on the footpath in Huia Street, a short distance front Cuba Street. His-wife survives him, but he has no family. An inquest will be held.
Two charges of wilful obscene exposure in Oxford Terrace were preferred against Arthur George Neilsen, carpenter, aged 37, married. Wellington, in the Magistrates’ Court, Lower Hutt, yesterday. One charge was dismissed because of the uncertainty of complainant, a young married woman, as to the date of the alleged offence. On the other charge, Neilsen reserved his defence aud was committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £25 each.
