Opened To Fishermen
“At the request of foreign powers,” Greenland has declared open the harbour of Faeringehavn on the southeastern coast, near the remarkable cod fishing waters found after the World War. American, French, British, Portuguese and Danish fishing,vessels made heavy hauls of cod recently and used the harbour for the first time. The harbour is protected from the .sea by towering islets. Ships can anchor at several places among the islets. Lights and marks and iron rings for moorings have been installed, and also a broadcasting station and a hospital with a doctor and nurses. Halibut is not found in great quantities on the banks. But cod may be encountered there in huge shoals. A Portuguese crew caught 48,000 cod with hand lines in six days. Fishermen agree that hardly anywhere else in the North Atlantic are coil to be found in such numbers as off West Greenland during the summer.
