Bequests From Lindsay Buick Estate Under the will of the late Mr. Thomas Lindsay Buick, C.M.G., the Wellington journalist and historian, the national art collection, and to ar lesser extent the University of Otago, are to benefit. Mr. Buick, who died at Wellington on February 22, left residuary estate estimated at from £ll,OOO to £12,000. The bulk of this is to be held fo r payment of the income therefrom to the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, Wellington, for the purchase of paintings, drawings, etchings, statuary and other works of art as the board shall consider’worthy of acquisition and preservation in the National Art Gallery. Mr. Buick also left liis private collection of paintings, some of which ,are of considerable historical importance, to the board of trustees of the Art Gallery and Museum, and this collection is to be known as the “Lindsay Buick Bequest.” A sum of £lOOO is set aside from the estate as a bequest to the Otago University, and the proceeds are to be used for the purchase of books, MS'S, engravings, and other material for the Hocking historical collection.
The total assets in the estate, are estimated to amount to between £14,000 and £15,000. The late Mr. Buick is survived by his wife, but there is no family. He was born at Oamaru in May, 1866, and for very many years was an active journalist. He devoted much of his time and means to researches into the early history of New Zealand, and was the author ofi-many books on this subject. Mr. Buick was also deeply interested in music. ,
