DEFENCE OF BRITISH DOMINIONS

Attitude Of England EXPLANATION SOUGHT BY MR. LYONS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received March 14, 10.20 p.m.) Canberra, March 14. Arising from the statement made by the British Prime Minister, Mr, Chamberlain, in the House of Commons a week ago regarding Imperial defence and the point whether Mr. Chamberlain meant that in time of crisis the Dominions could not rely on British naval and military assistance, the Prime -Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, cabled for an elaboration of Mr. Chamberlain’s statement. This was received today. Subsequently Mr. Lyons said that the first objective of the British Government includes not only the protection of the Mother Country but the preservation of trade routes, carried out by the naval forces supplemented by the military and air forces, which at the same time provide the principal protection for British territory all over the world. Mr. Lyons said Mr. Chamberlain assured him that it would be wrong to deduce from his speech that the protection of overseas possessions, because it appeared third on the list, was not regarded as of first-rate importance.
