DRIFT FROM RUGBY

Concern Of Eastbourne Club Committee APATHY OF BOYS AFTER LEAVING SCHOOL "The committee desires to draw attention to the of boys at present leaving college toward the playing of Rugby football, which is noticeable not only in Eastbourne but elsewhere, and would urge all members to use every incentive to prevent this drift away from the game bv enlisting new players and, in particular, the younger placers leaving school,” states the annual report of the Eastbourne Rugby Football Club, to be presented to the yearly meeting tonight. It is felt that the lack of success of the senior team was lafgely due. to the lack of . attention to training which, in view of the excellent facilities provided by the club, is somewhat hard to understand, states the report. Toward the-end of the season the team was affected by a number of injuries and this also had its effect on the other teams in the club. The net profit or loss for the past six years has been: 1932, £(> (loss) ; 1933, £39 (loss) ; 1934, £22 (profit) ; 1935, £2l (profit) ; 1936, £2B (nrofit) : 1937, £3O (profit). “Once again the only discordant note to be struck is in connection with the players’ subscriptions,” continues the report. “Although this item is slightly in excess of the previous year's total, there is still ample room for improvement. Under the Wellington Rugby Football Union’s accident fund regulations no player may receive any benefit until his subscription has been paid.” The bank credit of the club, together with cash in hand, represented an increase over the previous year's figures of £3l. This is especially gratifying in view of the added and bv no means small expense of the special bus which was made available to players free of charge. The club’s patron, Mr. G. Law, celebrated his 80th birthday during the season.
