GENERAL ELECTION

National Party And Waipawa Seat MR. A. E. JULL THE SOLE NOMINEE Dominion Special Service. Waipawa, March 9. Following Mr. J. D. Ormond’s withdrawal of his nomination for selection as National Party candidate for the Waipawa seat at the general elections, the Waipawa branch of the party received to-day a letter from Mr. F. J. O’Reilly asking that his nomination for selection also be withdrawn. The withdrawal of these two nominations leaves Mr. A. E. Jull as the sole nominee and it is expected that his candidature will be endorsed at a meeting of the selection committee to be held on Monday night. Both Mr. Ormond and Mr. O’Reilly, in their letters of withdrawal, have pledged themselves to support wholeheartedly the party’s official candidate. Mr. O’Reilly’s letter read as follows :—

“Referring to the recent developments in connection with the selection of a candidate to represent the National Party for the Waipawa seat at the forthcoming elections, I have now had the opportunity of considering the position fully. As the committee is aware, I have never had any personal aspiration to enter the political field and only allowed myself to be nominated as candidate for selection in deference to the wishes of many electors in the district.

"As I expressly reserved the right to withdraw if I felt at any time that the circumstances warranted it, and as I feel now that the best interests of the National Party can be served by my doing so at this stage, I have to request that my nomination for selection as the party’s candidate for the Waipawa seat be withdrawn.

“I wish to assure the committee that the official candidate will have not only my support but any assistance I can give him in his campaign in support of sane and sound Government of the country in the interests of all its citizens independent of class. “I desire to thank all those electors who have promised me their support, and I. ask them to cO-operate wholeheartedly with me in an effort to return to Parliament a National Party candidate for Waipawa.”
