POLICE RAID CLUB
Premises In Willis Street TWENTY MEN ARRESTED As a result of a raid carried out early this morning on premises at 33 Willis Street,, known as the Empire Club, 20 men will be charged with breaches of the Gaming Act. The club is situated on the top floor of a threestory building near the Empire Hotel. Two car-loads of detectives made the raid, one of the cars carrying a ladder which was placed against the verandah of the shops occupying the ground floor of the buildings. Five detectives entered the premises by way of the ladder and the fire escape and the others made an entry through the building. So rapid was the raid that those within the building were unaware that anything unusual was happening until just before the police entered. All those on the club premises were arrested, three vans being necessary to take them to the Central Police station. The arrival of the police outside the building at 12.15 a.m., when there were still a number of people in the streets, attracted considerable attention from passers-by, and at one time over 50 people were watching the work of the detectives.
