The s.s. Tuatea has recently been engaged by the Post and Telegraph Department with the cable gang from ■Wellington in locating a fault in the short cable which crosses Queen Charlotte Sound connecting Homeward with To Rawa, which is connected by land line to Picton. This cable was part of that recovered from the old Cable Bay route, Nelson, when this was abandoned. A short piece was relaid in the sounds about 1911 and is reputed to be nearly 50 years old. It has a very heavy armouring compared with the cables which, are used to-day to cross short waterways. It was found, however, when the cable was brought on board the Tuatea, that it was in very bad condition and not worth repairing. A new cable of the latest type will be laid, and the old cable will have to be dragged out of position. Cables cross the sounds in several places, thus obviating many miles of overland wiring.
