ROTARY CONFERENCE
Non-Political Nature Of Movement Stressed By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, February 22. Warm tributes to the work of Rotary in New Zealand were paid by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan and the mayor of Christchurch, Mr. Beanland, at the opening of the sixteenth Rotary conference to-day. The district governor, Mr. F. HallJones, presided and every club in New Zealand was represented. The proceedings are expected to last three days. The non-politieal nature of Rotary was emphasised by Mr. F. G. HaliJones. He referred to the attack made on the Government by a non-Rotarian speaker at a club gathering last year, and said that the president of the club had obtained an assurance that the speaker would not touch on party politics and did everything in' his power to minimise the harmful effects of the incident. As a result he was afraid that a false and hostile impression of Rotary had been created among a large section of the public. He asked the conference to pass a rule providing power for the president to interrupt any speaker at a club luncheon who touched on party politics or other forbidden ground. The resolution will be discussed later in the conference.
