NATIONAL SCOURGE

Rheumatism Causes Huge Losses

London, February 17.

The high cost of rheumatism was stressed by Lord Horder when appealing to the Parliamentary Medical Committee to support the work of the Empire Rheumatism Council. “This scourge costs the nation several million days’ incapacity of workers annually and £17,000,000 in sick pay and wages paid out by approved societies alone,” he said. “I am credibly informed there is as much rheumatism per thousand in Australia as in Great Britain, so if climate is a vital factor there must be other effects operating in Australia.” Sir Frank Fox said he was informed statistically that rheumatism caused more illness and more loss than cancer and tuberculosis combined.
