GIFTED PIANIST
New Zealander’s Tour In Australia Mr. Noel Newson, the gifted Christchurch pianist, returned this week from Australia. Mr. Newson, who was the accompanist on the occasion of the last tour of the Spivakoffski-Kurtz trio through New Zealand, gave recitals at the principal radio stations, and received every assurance that his artistic performances were appreciated. “I was somewhat surprised to find,” said Mr. Newson, “that the studio accommodation at the national radio stations in Sydney and Melbourne was so poor. We have nothing to complain about in New Zealand, for our studios are miles .better than the Australian ones. They are all so cramped and arranged on restricted lines as to space and freedom of movement. In New Zealand I have heard local station managers almost apologising to visiting artists from Australia about the studios over here. They have no need to do so. The pianofortes were lovely, however, concert Steinways every time.” During.his visit to Sydney, Mr. Newson made a gramophone record of Chopin’s “I’antasie Impromptu,” at the Columbia Company premises. He had not heard the record yet, as they had informed him It would be two or three weeks before they would be able to send one bn to.him. Recording for the gramophone was just the same as playing for radio. The player merely sat at the pianoforte In a large room and the recording apparatus was in an adjoining room—one opening out of the other.
Mr. Newson said he had hoped to meet Mr. Frank Hutchens, the distinguished pianist and composer, whose concerto he played in Wellington last year, but found that he had left on a visit to the Old Country. That was why Mr. Hutchens bad not come to New Zealand last Christmas for his annual holiday. A New Zealander who appeared to be doing well in Sydney was Mr. Ernest Empson, formerly of Christchurch, who was now teaching the pianoforte. It is not generally known that Miss Harriet Randall, of Karori, is a greataunt of Mr. Newson’s.
