PAHIATUA RACES
Annual Meeting Opens To-day
EVEN FIELD IN THE CUP
Form And Prospects (By The Watcher.) With the exception of the Cup. fields of moderate quality will parade at I’ahiatua to-day for the opening of the annual race meeting, but the raeinit should be keen and. interesting*. The turf at I’ahiatua is always good, and with the recent rain the going should bo perfect. It is a slightly turning track, but has a very long straight, as- long- as Trenthani, and this enables form to fun true and gives" every horse a chance. Betting will be single pool, and a course broadcast description of the running will be given over the Borh.-im system. . Ilorses in the maiden race that have shown form include lloyal Portrait. Earlscourt, Sunder and Rowana. Lucky Charm and Waterproof have been doing fair work at Woodville. There Ls a good chance for a 'surprise in a race of this description. Form horses in the Kouini Hack' are Serous. Mea Men, Bluffer, Le Toquet and Merryman, but there are possibles also in Hoynl Record, Sunny Blonde and Knightsbridge. State Bank has hot raced for a long time but at his best he would be well backed.
The Highweight form is not outstanding. Buster Brown’s recent, efforts place him well to (he fore. *but he is an aged horse not likely to improve. Bing Boy won at Marton and Royal Romance should be due for a return to form. Karl Colossus raced at Woodville in likely fa«hion and Twilight Song may be the bes": of those on the minimum.
The Cup should provide a good race, and the issue is open. Wellington running points to Ludullue Lad and Piikeko, while Master Cyklon, Limbohm, Helen Ford. Hunting Queen and Terry should all run well. At 7.13 Hunting Queen may be ridden by B. H. Morrin. At any rate, it is a weight which should secure a strong- horseman. Hunter’s Eve and Joanne have the form in (he two-year-old race. Brazil has shown pace on the tracks and is welllirod, as also is Lady Melfort. The form of the topwoights, while the best of what has been seen in public, is by no moans so good that n smart newcomer will not be able to win. Maestro is re]>orted to have been unlucky nt Ashhnrst and he has not a strong ]ot of opponents in the Hamna hack. Agog is a recent winner, and Naughty Marietta or Seyfried should show up.
The strength-of the hack sprinters can bo gauged from Diamond Cutter being No. 1 with 9.0. He should run well. The form is moderate enough to enable several of the others to make a forward showing. In his right form Paknnui would stand right out in the concluding event, but recent races have that he is becoming a hit sour, nnd nt his last istnrt nt Trenthnm he took no part in the running. Still he is much better class than his ojmonente to-day. Lone Raider. Mister Onox. Passion Fruit nnd Sunny Blondo should be prominent. The following horses may be supported in their engagements Mniden Rhee: Rowena and Sunder. Konini Hack : Le Toquet nnd Bluffer. Ballance Highweight: Bing Boy and Earl Colossus. Pahiatua Cup: Hunting Queen and Helen Ford. Nursery Handicap: Hunter’s Eve and Ladv Melfort. Hamim Hack: Maestro and 'Naughty Marietta.
