FINALS AT AWAPUNI

Smart Gallops By Pahiatua Candidates Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North. January 27. A. cold wind made conditions unpleasant tills morning for the final gallops of Awapuni horses engaged nt Pabkitua to-mor-row, but the course was much faster than earlier in the week, the plough in particular being in great order. On the course proper the flags were out 48 feet. The Taranaki Cup candidate Wildflower was responsible for an outstanding gallop over seven furlongs on the plough and added to her admirers for next week. Hunting Queen ran a good mile in view of her Pahiatua Cup engagement. Merryman, Bluffer, Bing Boy and Bolling Home all ran well over six furlongs on this track, and on the course proper Aria ran a fast six furlongs, and Merry Ruler went well over live. She is rapidly coining to hand again. Aero Lad (Broughton) ran the last three furlongs of his workout, in 41 2-5. He was going easily all the way. Merry Ruler (Broughton) broke away at the five furlongs and showed great pace to cover the journey in 1.5 3-5. He was steadied Over the last three furlongs, which occupied 39 4-5. Aria (Johnston) went away smartly from the six'-furlong peg to run down to the half-mile in 24 1-5. Aurora's Love is being treated to a sixweeks spell before being tuned up for the winter meetings. Riding Engagements. Riding engagements for the Pahiatua meeting to-morrow include: W. J. Broughton, Pladie Lone Raider, Royal Record, Colleen Gain, Brazil, and Earlscourt; G. R. Tattersnll, Maestro, Merryman, Joe Louis, and Segra ; S. Anderson, Gay Artist, Royal Romance, and’Diamond Cutter ; J. Chaplin, Mon Ace; P. Jarvis, Bing Boy. Mr. C. Boyle’s Pink Coat —The Geisha colt Profile has been gelded and will be given a good spell to enable him to build up again. Martara’s three-quarter-brother in blood, Baldric, has improved considerably with his 'three-mouths spell, and will shortly resume work, bub Tidewaiter, who is already better for his let-up, will not be required to go into commission until the late auumn. G. W. New has begun working the Vaals —Idanoe two-year-old filly, who will carry Mr. S. Andrews’s colours. This full-sister to Vadanoe is a compact youngster and a very racy type. She takes the place of Final who was prevented through unsoundness from showing ills best form. Old Surrey, who was cut about in his race on the last day at Trentham and whose off-hock swelled, is enjoying a short respite, and Catalogue, who looks none the worse for his trip, is also on the easy list for a few days. A. E. Neale took Play On to Auckland at the beginning of the -week to contest the Wynyard Plate at the Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday. Mr. Maurice Millar’s Pliilamor gelding is none the worse for his escapade in the Trial Plate at Trentham, and has only to begin reasonably well oil Saturday to give a good account of himself. Aureus has had to be relieved of her engagement in'the Taranaki Hack Plate next week because of her success in the Kaitoke Handicap at Trentham, which put her £lO above the hack limits.. The Gascony—Aureate filly has won £5lO in first money this season, her successes being tlic Puhi Maiden at Otaki (£65), Marton Juvenile (£130), Marton Summer Hack (£105), and the Kaitoke Hack (£210). Ou her Trentham form her chances in the Taranaki Hack Plate looked exceptionally bright.
