Auckland Championships A. D. BROWN HARD-PRESSED BY J. MAYSON By Telegraph—;Press Association. Auckland, January 27. The outstanding feature of the play in the quarter-finals of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s men's singles championship was the match between A. D. Brown, title-holder, and J. X. Mayson. The contest lasted nearly three hours and went to live sets before Brown won 6-3, 8-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4. Brown was leading 5-3 in the third set. with match point when a decision called against him upset his play for some time. The match should actually have ended there. Mayson assumed the ascendancy and had a 3-1 lead in the final set, when Brown staged a brilliant recovery that never left the issue in doubt. Other results were: Bedford (Wellington) beat J. Gunn (Auckland), 4-6, 6-1. 6-1, 7-5; N. G. Sturt (Auckland) beat Allen, 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; D. C. Coombe (Wellington) beat J. Roach (Hamilton). 2-6. 6-1. 6-1, .7-5.
