MORMONS WIN

Return Baseball Match With Wellington

In a return match on the Winter Show ground on Saturday the American Mormon baseball team beat a Wellington team by 19 to 12, reversing the previous decision. The match was a lively one, and was watched by several hundred spectators. Toronto, Mormon pitcher from Salt Lake City, was again conspicuous and played a fine game. The spectacular member of the home team was the burly Maori, Jim Cootes, whose dashes for the home base were twice cut short by smart work on the part of the Mormons. The Mormons, who had been training on D’Urville Island, had greatly improved their catching and throwing. The Mormons rapidly established a lead of six runs and gave Wellington no opportunity to draw level. Toronto, Dastrupp and Parks were prominent on the Mormon side, and P. Wilson, F. Barrett and G. Griflin on the Wellington side. The latter whs not a representative team, as several of the clubs from which members would have been picked required their full strength for inter-club matches. The Mormon team was: — Catcher, Parkes (Nephi) ; pitcher, Toronto (Salt Lake City) ; first base, Dastrup (Sigurd); second base, Ince (Idaho) ; third base. Smith (Holiday); short stop, Watts (Logan) ; right field, Mason (Ogden) ; centre field. Campbell (Salt Lake City); left field, Hutchinson (Salt Lake City).
