END OF CORNWELL CUP YACHTING WEEK

The Monotype Cup AUCKLAND WINS A CLOSE EVENT

The Monotype Cup race for Takapuna class yachts at Plimmerton on Saturday morning drew an entry ol_ 11 boats, among (hem several that had sailed in the Cornwell Cup contest during the week, and lite competition was keen. A light breeze from the north-west made conditions easy and, though there was only one man sailing the boat in each case, there were no mishaps, fl'he Auckland boat, Swish, sailed by S. Mason, won after a hard tussle with Tauranga (Valeta, blue) sailed by D. McLeod and 11. Stutter, sailing the Wellington boat Nukumai, made a strong bid on the last lap to finish third. Nukumai capsized just before the start, and sailing in a lightbreeze with a wet sail and a hull full of water made the first lap a hard one. In spite of this difficulty in the early stage of the race, Stutter sa’iled well and was beaten home by only 27 seconds. Mr. A. Round, the Christchurch delegate to the Cornwell Cup conference, sailed Rascal and did well to finish fourth. The fleet went away to a good start on the windward and leeward course of three laps, but on the "first beat back to the clubhouse there was a substantial lead gained by the first three boats, Swish, Oi and Rascal witli Valeta (blue) and Nukumai well back with the others. The race started at 10.30 a.m. and the order at the end of the first lap was: Swish, 10.47.8; Oi, 10.47.30; Rascal, 10.47.35; . Twink. Nukumai. Valeta (blue), Oakie, Billy Boy, Robin, Mamaku and Damfino. The second lap saw little change in the order, hut Nukumai improved her position from fifth to fourth and was sailing strongly. During this lap Robin’s traveller broke and she retired. The wind almost died away during this round and difficulty was experienced in laying the clubhouse buoy. The order the second time round was: Swish, 11.5.8; Oi. 11.5.23; Rascal, 11.5.52; Nukumai, Twink, Valeta (blue), Oakie, Damfino, Mamaku, and Billy Boy. The final lap saw Nukumai sail through into third position and Swish and Oi had a keen struggle on the beat back to the finishing line. Swish managed to maintain her lead, which she had held all through the race, and the following finishing times were recorded :— Swish (S. Mason, Auckland), 11.21.56 1 Oi (B. Snedden, Tauranga), 11.22.20 2 Nukumai (11. Stutters, Wellington), 11.22.23 3
