DISPUTE ON ORFORD
Patched Up After Unruly Wharf Scenes VESSEL LEAVES SYDNEY (Received December 17, 6.55 p.m.) Sydney, December 17. 'The dispute on the Orient liner Orford has been patched up. The stewards returned to the ship at noon, and the Orford sailed for New Zealand via Brisbane at 1 p.m. There were unruly scenes between police and strikers at the Woolloomooloo Wharf last night when more than 200 members of the crew of the Orford walked off the ship. One striker attempted to address the crew from a pile of timber, and when he ignored a police order to desist the police mo_unted the pile and attempted to drag him away. In an instant fists were flying, and several of the strikers were seized.
Late last night moves for a. settlement resulted in about 50 of the strikers returning to the ship, which left the wharf and anchored in the harbour.
The demands of the strikers were the dismissal of the staff commander on the ground of unwarranted, persecution of tlie staff; the provision of seating accommodation at meals; the withdrawal of rigid inspection in the Tropics; and permission for all hands to leave the vessel in port without written permission. Captain Cameron addressed the strikers at the wharf and said he would not agree to the staff commander's removal, but the men cheered him at the conclusion of his address.
