Pan-American Airways MAIL CONTRACT QUESTION By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received December 17, 8.10 p.m.) San Francisco, December 17, Pan-American Airways denies reports that its service to New Zealand is contingent on it getting the American air mail contract. The company states that its plans do not depend on the contract.
MR. GATTY’S COMMENT “Has Been The Case All The Time” By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, December 17. “That has been the case all the time,” said Mr. H. Gatty. special representative of Pan American Airways in New Zealand and Australia, when rhe message from San Francisco was referred to him. “It has not been a condition of the starting of the service. We have been flying on the Bermuda run without a subsidy for some time,” he continued. “This service was commenced without a subsidy and is still continuing without one. It has been running since about the end of April this year. “The date of the arrival of the. survey Clipper on her - second flight is as yet not definite,” Mr. Gatty added. “There has been no change in plans to receive the ship and everything will be in readiness for her arrival.” Mr. Gatty mentioned that Mr. A. L. Charman, chief radio operator of the company in New Zealand, who has been at Russell during the past week installing radio equipment in the company’s station there, was now testing the sets and getting them in order for use.
