APPOINTMENT OF CAPTAIN CONGDON

Captain M. I’. Congdon, head stevedore for the Shaw, Saviil and Albion Co., Ltd., at. Wellington, has been appointed assistant to the traffic manager and chief wharfinger for the Wellington Harbour Board, and will take up his now duties on February 1. _ Captain Congdon thus becomes the virtual successor to the late Mr. T. Boon, who died on November 28.

A native of Wales, Captain Congdon went to sea in 1915 and served his apprenticeship with the New Brunswick and White Star Line. In 1921 he joined the service of the Aberdeen Line (George Thompson and Sons, Ltd.) as a junior officer, and when that line was merged with the Shaw, Saviil and ’Albion Company in 1927 he was third officer of the Sophocles, in which he was promoted second officer when her name was changed to Tamaroa. After a short period on the Mamari, he was promoted chief officer of the Maimoa. Captain Congdon was serving in the Mahia when in January, 1932, he ended 17 years at sea by coming ashore at Wellington as assistant to Captain A. Black, head stevedore for the Shaw, Saviil and Albion Company. Captain Congdon succeeded Captain Black early in the present year when the latter became assistant to the marine superintendent for the company at Wellington. Captain Congdon, who is hold in high esteem on the Wellington waterfront, yesterday received many congratulations on his new and important appointment.
