THE CITY MAYORALTY
The representative deputation which waited on Mr. T. C. A. Hislop on Thursday last to request him to again offer himself for office as mayor of Wellington paid a deserved tribute to the services he has rendered. It must be generally recognised that Mr. Hislop has been unsparing of his time and energy in furthering the interests of the city. Equally it must be conceded that he has filled the office with dignity and ability, and with due regard to the interests of all sections of the community. In the difficult years of the depression the burdens of the position arising out of the need for careful administration of the municipality’s finances and the urgent need for assisting to relieve the hardship of widespread unemployment were extremely heavy. In respect of the latter problem in particular Mr. Hislop's personal efforts undoubtedly were responsible for the alleviation of a great deal of distress among those unfortunate enough to be out of work; and his endeavours on their behalf were characterised by that persistence and practical-mindedness which has come to be associated with his work for the city. In acceding to the request of the deputation Mr. Hislop referred to the coming Centennial celebrations and remarked on his desire to continue to carry on this work with which lie had already been very happily associated. There can be no doubt that, with bis experience, platform ability and life-long connection with the city of Wellington, he is exceptionally well equipped to carry out the responsible duties which will fall on the occupant of the mayoral office on that historic occasion.
