RED CROSS SOCIETY

Awards Made And Gifts Presented A visit was paid recently by the secretary of the Red Cross Society and the Red Cross nurse in charge of instructional work to tile Sts. Peter and Paul Convent School, Lower Hutt, to present the Junior Red Cross Cup to the school most proficient in first, aid work in the Wellington district. This school has had the honour of winning the trophy for the second year in succession.

On arrival at the school the representatives of the society were received by Father Daly and the Sister in charge. After the presentation ceremony Father Daly spoke of the value of the society’s work in the school. The students gave a number of concerted vocal items and a demonstration of verse-speaking. The secretary of the society conveyed thanks to Father Daly and members of the staff nt the school for the practical interest and support shown in furthering the society’s work. The scholars concerned were also commended for the keen interest they have maintained.

Visits were also paid to the school nt Makara, where a Junior Red Cross Circle is carried on. Useful garments and toys made by the students for the chil-

dren at the Home of Compassion were on display, the goods being handed over to the children recently. The work of the Junior Red Cross Circles of the Island Bay School culminated in a display of garments and toys for the Home of Compassion and the Karitane Hospital. The president of the circle handed over the garments which were acknowledged by Miss Templeton, matron of Karitane, and Mr. Hoskins, representing the Home of Compassion. Thanks were extended to Mr. Howarth and the teachers for the encouragement they had shown in this work'. The children subsequently handed the garments and toys to the members of the institutions.
