Annual Visit To Homes And
Orphanages COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ GIFTS The annual distribution of Christinas gifts to children in homes find institutions by the Wellington Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association took place yesterday, when a party consisting of Messrs. H. 11. Nash, president, IV. Smith, immediate past president, J. E. Quinn, C. L. Dentice, F. Eller. .1. Murphy, G. Olsen, A. A. Davies (Melbourne C.T. Association), and R. E. Selby, secretary, made a visit to six orphanages to which the allocation from the Christmas Cheer Fund had not already been made. In all the sum of £517 was distributed this year by the association to 21 homes and orphanages, of which amount £lOO was donated to the Blind Soldiers’ Fund.
Yesterday the children yelled with unrestrained joy in the lollie scrambles find expressed delight that was infectious when toys were distributed. In addition to the sweets ami toys so dear to the heart of the very young, substantial cheques—the proceeds of the association’s rec-ent street collection—were handed to the heads of the six homes for expenditure on behalf of the youngsters and others under their charge. The first visit was paid to the Anglican Girls' Home at Karori, where the matron, Miss A. Parlane, received the party. At the City Mission Mr. N. C. Titcherier accepted the association's cheque with suitable words of gratitude. The party then visited the Home of Compassion, being welcomed by Mother Cecelia. After a scramble and the distribution of toys, the members inspected the babies’ nursery and the invalid ward, departing with expressions of appreciation from Mother Cecelia and cheers from the children. Then followed visits to the Levin Memorial Home, the Owen Street Salvation Army Home for Girls, where a delightful time was spent, and to the tiny tots at the Citizens’ Day Nursery, whose joy knew no bounds. At each warm-hearted appreciation of the association’s interest was expressed. Following were the allocations made:—
The association inaugurated its Christmas cheer fund in 1920. To date the sum of £9261 has been distributed to the homes and orphanages, while since 1924 £2250 has been given to the blind soldiers’ fund, a total of 111,511.
