GOODS STOLEN FROM EMPLOYERS

Probation For Four Men

Admitting me theft of paint and putty to the value of £lO/7/6 from his employers, George Wyvern Cade, aged 23, factory employee, was placed on probation for 12 months and ordered to make restitution amounting to £9/19/9 by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said the goods were taken from Messrs. R. and E. Tingey Ltd. while accused worked in their factory on night shift between March 15 and November 15. The firm regarded accused as a particularly good workman and was prepared to take him back. Goods to the value of £9/19/9 had not been recovered.

Another employee of the same firm, Harold Martin Mackley, admitted stealing painting material to a total value of £6/11/- while engaged in the same work. His work was also quite satisfactory and the firm was willing to retain him. He was also placed on probation for 12 months and ordered to make restitution of £3/8/6, the value of goods unrecovered. Eric Clarence Paul, a single man aged 23, also engaged in the firm’s paint factory, was charged with stealing painting material to a value of £3/9/8, most of which had been recovered. Detective-Ser-geant Doyle said that in this case, too, Paul’s employers were quite satisfied with his work and were retaining him. He was placed on probation for 12 months and ordered to make restitution of 10/-. A fourth employee of the firm, Maxwell Bowen Wallace, was placed on probation for 12 mouths. Detective-Sergeant Doyle said that Tingey’s had previously found Wallace guilty of theft when employed by them at Wanganui. He had been given another chance and transferred to Wellington, but they had now discharged him. Mr. 11. Mitchell appeared for Mackley and Mr. A. C. Seivewright for Wallace. Their requests for suppression of names were not granted.
