Wellington Results
The game of baseball is growing in popularity in Wellington, and matches were played at all grounds ou Saturday. Six were scheduled for the Miramar ground, two for the Winter Show, and two for Petone. All drew increased gates and all showed an improvement in the general standard of play. Results were as follows :— Kaiwarra 12, Miramar Hearts 11; Central Kiwis 14, Athletic Oil 8; Miramar Spades 17, St. George Dragons la; Jenkins Gym. A'27, Miramar Diamonds 17; Jenkins Gym. B 10. Newtown Gnats 15: Miramar Club 12, Broadway Demons I): Boulevarde 8, Kilbirnie Kabs G; Rawleighs 6. Kelvin Gym. 3, Miramar Diamonds opened against Jenkins Gym. A and careful play on both sides kept the scores low. The game brightened considerably, however, and for the winners Bowman (2), A. Jenkin's, Pringle and Steel, and for the losers, Arbuthnot, Doneghue, Hoffman and McManus showed best form. Kaiwarra and Miramar Hearts had a thrilling contest, and toward the end of the match Miramar made a game effort, Wickham, Mclntosh, McClellan. Cameron, Woods and Askew all coming home. They were going well when Hull fell for a brilliant catch by Olsen and the match was over, Aliramar failing by one to even the scores. . Toronto, pitcher for Central Kiwis, and one of the best batsmen, was largely desponsible for his team beating Atlantic Oil. The game was full of action and incident ant) was played in fine spirit. Coutts and Campbell were also very useful and gave Atlantic little chance. Fielding and catching were good. St. George Dragons gave Miramar Spades a. fine run and just failed to get ahead. It was good and exciting play, Miramar securing a win by two runs after being behind till the last innings. There were several “homers” scored during th/ match. The other matches were close and well contested and play throughout was of high standard. Scores were kept down by sound fielding and catching on both sides. These matches were a preliminary to a championship contest which will begin after the New Year, the trophy being a fine cup presented by the Jenkins gy mna siu m.
