ENGLAND PROSPEROUS
“People Unanimous On Most Things”
"England is very prosperous at the present time,” said Mr. P. A. Godfrey Philips, of the well-known tobacco firm, who arrived at Wellington from England by the Awatea yesterday. “I know that quite a number of people are attributing that prosperous condition to the re-armament campaign. No doubt that plays a part in the condition of affairs at Home, but England's prosperity is based on something a good deal more solid than rearmament. Moreover, the public is behind the Government in its rearmament proposals. Indeed, I would go as far as to say that in the present state of things it is government by agreement, The people are unanimous in their 1 approval of the Government's action: indeed, they arc unanimous in most things. “England is fortunate in having as Earl Baldwin's successor as Prime Minister Mr. Neville Ghamberlaiu, who is an extremely able man. Indeed, in considering the state of England today one must not forget that success in the financial field has been largely due to the fact that Mr. Neville Chamberlain has been Chancellor of the Exchequer since 1931, and has had to carry immense responsibilities. England is fortunate indeed in the possession at the present time of two .such able men as Neville Chamberlain ami Anthony Eden. Renewed strength and fresh hope have come with changed conditions.”
