A MEAN THEFT
Money Taken From FellowHospital Patient YOUNG MAN IMPRISONED ‘This is a particularly mean class of theft,” said Detective-Sergeant I’. Doyle in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday when prosecuting «'ames William Burton, labourer, aged 23. for the theft of £5 from tyder Nilson on November 6. Accused was sentenced by Mr. J. H.’Lux-ford, S.M./to three months imprisonment with hard labour. Burton and Nilson were both patients in the Wellington Hospital, said Detec-tive-Sergeant Doyle. The hitter, a seaman from a ship in port, had very little knowledge of English. Burton jidvised him' that it was unsafe to keep £5 in his locker, and Nilson gave him the money to place in the hospital office. Accused, who was discharged two days afterward, kept the money, but, when he discovered the police were making inguiries, he returned to the hospital and'.refunded £3. In a statement to the police he said that he took the money because he was hard up and that he intended to pay it back.
