HEREFORD STUDS

Some Of New Zealand’s Most Prominent Herds

One of the leading New Zealand Hereford studs is the “Waihuka” herd, owned ami bred by Messrs. Hutchinson Bros., Gisborne. The excellence of these cattle has been proved in recent years by their many notable victories at the leading North Island shows, and by the high prices paid for them whenever they are offered for sale. Founded in 1913, this herd must rank as one of the largest Hereford studs in New Zealand, and it is interesting to note that the proprietors have regularly gone to considerable expense in importing the best available bulls from England to maintain the high standard. Notable recent importations arc Paunton James, who cost £1209, landed on the farm. More recently, ths yearling bull, Flashlight, was brought to Gis borne. This bull, who cost over 650 guineas, won the Owen Williams ' 100 guinea challenge cup at the English Herd Book Society’s Show in February, last year. Rakaipaka Polled Herefords A first-class herd of Polled Herefords has been developed by Mr. T. VV Grahame Tombleson in the “Rakaipaka Stud at Wairoa. The whole herd consists of families noted for their constancy and ability in breeding bulla of the type required for baby beef. Bred on country that is far from ideal, these cattle never fail to find a ready market, both for breeding and beef purposes. The leading families represented in the herd include many whose parents have made show-ring history in various parts of the world. Acton Herefords

Among the many prominent breeders of Herefords in New Zealand is Mr. H. W. Barker, Gisborne, owner of the “Acton” Stud. Mr. Barker, has had a considerable amount of experience in beef breeding, and the excellent quality of the stock he regularly exhibits or offers for sale bears striking testimony to his ability. His stock is reared under strenuous conditions, being quite unpampered. Included in a long list of showring successes is reserve champion bull at the 1935 Royal Show at Hastings.
