TE PUNA SHORTHORNS
Shorthorn cattle continue to hold the world’s record for high prices sired; a new high level was recently established when a single bull realised 5000 guineas in the Argentine. The sale of this bull is of interest to Shorthorn breeders of New Zealand, for Mr. D. J. Holden, proprietor of the famous “To Puna” Shorthorn herd, Hastings, has in use on the farm two imported bulls, Vindictive or Stonelands and Barugh Golden Star, both of whom, like the 5000-guinea bull, trace back to Balcairn White Eagle, the most outstanding bull ever used in Scotland, the home of the breed. “Te Puna” Shorthorns are noted tor their remarkable quality, and Mr. Holden’s herd enjoys a demand second to none in New Zealand. So much so, that this season, as in the past, all the young
cattle available for sale have been readily purchased at unusually good prices, and, in addition, many more have been booked for future delivery. New Zealand breeders will watch with keen interest the results to be brought about by Mr. Holden’s latest importation, Barugh Golden Star, the bull that won the Gill Memorial Shield for the finest bred bull in the whole of Cumberland for the 1935-36 season. This bull is not only well infused with prominent blood from the Argentine, but also has a double infusion of the breeding of the famous Royal Dallier, who was first and champion at the Penrith Show last year.
