REPORTS OF HIGHER TARIFFS

Action By New Zealand Against Australia Sydney, October 20. The “Daily Telegraph” says that reports that the New Zealand Government intends to raise the tariffs against Australian-manufactured goods are insistent. These reports are added to by the president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, Mr. D. Henry, who on his arrival from New Zealand yesterday said that the New Zealand Government would probably take action after th e Australian Federal elections. Mr. Henry added: “The Government's plans will be in the interests of the New Zealand and British manufacturers, as Britain is our best export customer for primary products. At present New Zealand imports from Australia are four times more than she exports to this country. The Government has taken heed % of the manufacturers’ protests against the flood of Australian .goods, and is determined to act.” “We have to protect New Zealand industries,” said the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, commenting on the above message, “but why we should talk about Australia more than any other country Ido not know. We are not making a definite statement at the present time, and we are not coins to be drawn into it by anyone.”
